Welcome to Somali Childcare -Trust's Site!!
I just got back from helping deliver emergency supplies in one of the most isolated parts of Somalia's Al-Qaeda-stricken Jubaland Province. Our relief team — which included six young Somali volunteers — set out at 9 A.M. today for the alanley village of Kismayu, about 12 hours from the provincial capital where we've set up operations.
The team distributed hygiene kits — which include much-needed items like soap, detergent, towels and bandages — to almost 14 primary school students. Most of these children's homes were either severely damaged or destroyed by the September Alqaeda that struck the entire city. Today they're living in small tents with their parents and whatever small belongings they could salvage from their homes.
The families of these children were gravely poor: many households in this area struggle to survive on not much more than a dollar per day. So, as you can imagine, the gift of these hygiene supplies is especially important now that they've lost what little they had. The kits only cost $16 each, but what a difference they've already made.
You should have seen the looks on the children's faces as they got in line to pick up a kit for their families. There was such happiness, curiosity and excitement. And, when they were handed their kits by our volunteers, the children ran hurriedly back to their rooms to discover what was inside.
One young girl, 11-year-old jubaland, kismayu, was so moved by the kit that she began to cry. One of her friends, 11-year-old Halima comforted her then told us, "These kits make us so thankful for people who are coming to help us. They really care about us."
Your support helps us reach out to children like these whose lives have been trouble by the war. With thousands of people still displaced throughout Kismayu, we need your help to continue reaching families.
Please consider a generous gift to our Kismayu war Fund. And, on behalf of the children and teachers I visited today, thank you for helping.
kids pictures will be posted soon.
With warm regards,
